What Members Thought

I have been working my way through Ian McEwan's books, and I love how he takes one event in a character's life, and it's that pivotal moment that changes everything. Joe Rose and his girlfriend Clarissa are sharing a picnic when a hot air balloon overhead is floundering, and several people in the area realize that a tragedy needs to be averted. As always a great story by McEwan.

McEwan chronicles suburbia as if it was a crime scene. The underlying violence seems to seep through the civilized cracks and infect the protagonists. The first person narrator puts you in a delicate balance of trust/mistrust throughout and I only felt a little manipulated by the end, but it was the good kind -- where you know the author is pulling your strings, but he did it well enough that you don't care.

Impossible to put down. McEwan is a master writer (though needed the kindle dictionary). Creepy and interesting story ... I'm compelled to watch the movie version now.
