I picked this up due to fond memories of viewing the 1983 movie in biology class. In this 1963 book, naturalist Farley Mowat chronicles his experiences observing wolves in the Canadian barrenlands 1948-49. I have mixed feelings about the book. On the plus side: it presented a positive image of wolves and stirred interest in their preservation. However, as a scientist I'm put off by the embellishments Mowat throws in both to make the story more entertaining and to sway the reader toward his point

Farley Mowat heads off into the Canadian wilderness in search of wolves. He knows everything people have learned about wolves and everything he knows is wrong.
I wasn't expecting this to be such a clever and funny book. Highly recommended.

I finally got to read the book after seeing the movie that I loved so many years ago. While there were some differences between the two they were really (I think) just for the purpose of making the movie a more structured narrative. In other words, not like real life. The book is funny and poignant, informative and a pleasure to read.
