Although this book felt longg and a tad wordy at times, it was a very engaging read. It had adventure, history, love, geography, and philanthropy....how can you beat that when it's non-fiction. It gave me a much better picture of Afghanistan's plight, as well as some history of the surrounding countries. And I love the fact that Greg M. (the author) worked so hard for years to help young girls (as well as boys) in the middle east by building schools for them. Because it was co0written by Greg M.

I should start by saying that I really think Greg Mortenson is doing really good work and I value his philosophy of fighting terrorism with education instead of violence. That being said, I didn't really like this book as much as I'd hoped. The back of the book refered to Greg Mortenson as a "real-life Indiana Jones" and the entire book followed in that vain of some sort of adventure novel with Greg Mortenson as the hero. I liked this book okay. I felt that the story is great, Greg Mortenson is such an amazing person with all the things that he did. I also learned a lot from the story about culture of the country. The problem is: I hated the narrator. He made very interesting story incredibly uninteresting. I loved the part about how he met his wife. Such a beautiful story!

I could not really get through this book. I tried for some time...and maybe it was my habit of reading it at the laundromat, left a bad taste in my mouth. But I just didn't care enough to pick it up a lot. So I am officially giving it up, which I don't do often. Not a bad book, though, but not my (heh heh) cup of tea.
