I'm a big fan of John Wyndham, whom I first read back in my early teens and have continued to read and re-read throughout my adult life. That's testimony in and of itself, I suppose.
Wyndham's sci-fi novels on the surface appear to be of the sensational variety, and there usually is some plot device -- like the strange triffids of this book -- that drives the action.
