I got this book as an accidental mailing from the Quality Paperback Book Club. Was a bit skeptical at first, but the narrative soon won me over.
What other readers may not know is that Conor Grennan is the son of Eamon Grennan, a very fine Irish poet who lives in the States. This knowledge gave the book an added depth for me. Little Princes is the name of the orphanage in Nepal where Conor Grennan volunteered in 2004. Nepal was in the midst of a 10 year long civil war when Conor arrived. Conor's intention was to stay three months and then spend a year traveling around the world. This was an interesting book that did manage to educate me on Nepal and the plight of Nepal's children as a result of their civil war. Ultimately though, it is a "Rich White Western ExPat Saves the World" type book, which started to grate on me after awhile. This book has a promise of delivering a story about humanity and self service. And a love story woven into it as well. It does make me believe that one person can make a difference. I read these kind stories and I wonder why we complain about anything - regardless of our circumstances, most people I know have it pretty good.
