Chilling memoir from a survivor of the Pol Pot era. A sad read, as to be expected, but her story needs to be heard. It's also a great glimpse into what children see, hear, and remember during tragic and traumatic events.

I read this in preparation for seeing the musical "Cambodian Rock Band," at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this summer. (The musical is wonderful, by the way!) When I read the premise of CRB I knew I wanted to understand better the historical context—I was entirely ignorant of the Khmer Rouge—and found this book. Ung's memoir is well written and told with powerful simplicity. Highly recommended.

This book was emotional and phenomenal. I was actually crying when I read it and besides pulling at your heart strings, it also gives good insight into what happened during the reign of Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.
