Chilling memoir from a survivor of the Pol Pot era. A sad read, as to be expected, but her story needs to be heard. It's also a great glimpse into what children see, hear, and remember during tragic and traumatic events.

I read this in preparation for seeing the musical "Cambodian Rock Band," at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this summer. (The musical is wonderful, by the way!) When I read the premise of CRB I knew I wanted to understand better the historical context—I was entirely ignorant of the Khmer Rouge—and found this book. Ung's memoir is well written and told with powerful simplicity. Highly recommended.
