I thought I would really like this book, because I really enjoy historical fiction, especially British historical fiction, but I did not. There was just something about this writing that I did not like, and that prevented me from really getting into the story - and I'm not sure what that thing was. It's almost literally like being the proverbial fly on the wall. I'm really engaged when an author fleshes out a period of history like this. It's clear Mantel is a scholar, but she is also an excellent storyteller. The story is cohesive, the characters consistent and the language makes the period of Henry VIII accessible to the 2nd millennia without compromising what we know of this time period of history before film, tv and social media.
