This book was a little too dark and haunting for me, but very well written. The main character, Querry, is a world famous architect and womanizer who attempts to "disappear" from the world by retreating to a leper colony run by the Catholic church deep in the Congo forest. Like lepers who lose feeling in affected limbs, he believes he has lost the capacity to feel. As usual with Greene, as Querry "recovers" his ability to feel, he also recovers his susceptability to pain. ...more
