This is a quiet book. As one of my fellow book club members said, it's a book where there's no "plot"; nothing really happens, per se. Luckily for people like me, people like Jo Walton are very happy to write novels that aren't plotty, but instead extended character explorations. Among Others is an epistolary novel -- it takes the form of Mori, the main character's, diary -- and it uses that form to great effect. • This is just an okay read for me for walking. I would have put the print down after a chapter or two
• It was the young narrator and the coming-of-age parts of the book that I did not enjoy. But, I can see that teens would probably enjoy this story.
• The part I enjoy was the commentary/comments on the scifi books and the authors.

While nothing will ever quite touch her magnificent alternative history trilogy "Small Change," Walton brings to life a very touching love letter to the dawn of an SF fan and offers up a sweet little sense of do-over to those who wish they'd lived their teen years with more self-confidence.
