This book, like ‘The Tin Drum’ is a perfect book. It is beautifully written, almost bare- yet with so much depth that it creeps up on you before you realise you’re completely invested and wrapped up wholly in its depths. I love his writing style and the way he describes childhood, and astute observations as spoken from a naive narrator. What makes it sting is how the narrator himself was witness, confessor, perpetrator and protector at the same time. I will be reading more Grass as soon as possi
