An excellent book about Berlin at the end of the war, caught between the Russians and the Americans. I learned a lot from this book and enjoyed the story too. Lots of great plot twists. Now I want to see if I can find the movie version.

A lot of fiction about the second world war divides characters into neat-and-tidy, good-guy-bad-guy piles. Thankfully, this one shows the shades of grey in all their glory. No perfect saints or unrepentant sinners, just ordinary people trying to find a path they can live with in a world that forces horrible choices. An incisive look at an often-ignored moment in history.

This book started out slow for me - it was hard to get engrossed. But as it went out I got more and more hooked and wanted to see how it all turned out. It was just a little complicated for me to keep up with over a period of time - I wish I could have read it all in one sitting so the plot twists would have stayed with me a little longer.
