I believe it is a masterpiece of the 18th century literature that could easily be a best seller if it would be published nowadays. Of course it could need some slight adjustments, but in most parts is as fine as it was when it was published.
It is hard not to find at least a character that you will sympathize from this book, since are characters fit for everyone. And the plot is so ingeniously crafted so that all characters are exploited to their fullest potential. You simply cannot but like this

Letters. And what letters they are.

The reader gets an inside view to love, revenge and lust all played out like a game of chess. The Marquise de Merteuil is heartless in her manipulations and she has no second thoughts in her pursuit of revenge.
