I’ve said I’m going to read this book for the last three years, and now I’ve finally done it. Yippee! And, happily, it’s as good as they promised.
It’s a masterful puzzle of a book, filled with magic, and embedded in black and white. It’s the story of two illusionists, Celia and Marco, pitted against each other in a contest of skills. The chessboard for the two contenders is the night circus, an amazing circus that only opens at night, and features the most startlingly brilliant feats of magic an ...more

I'm sure this book has already been reviewed a million times, or nearly so, but I'll add my voice to the cacophony of voices praising this book. Though I, as a Christian, have reservations about the divination in this book (divination is forbidden in the Torah) I thought the book was well written, well constructed, and fascinating.

I really liked the story and all of the elements: magic, twins, a circus, a challenge-to-the-death and of course star-crossed lovers. Morgenstern blended beauty with tragedy and fear in a captivating way. I could certainly imagine myself there as a spectator. Very few books that I read have the ability to take magic and make it seem very possible and real. The descriptions were also very detailed and delicious something that I certainly appreciate. Bravo and looking forward to more of her work.

I have to give a hand to the whimsy and imagery associated with putting together this highly creative and artistic circus.
However, the plot and character development was so thin, I was always waiting for something...and all I'd get is more imagery of the circus...and yes the circus is truly alive. There was more action and story in the last 5%, than in the whole book.
I fully admit I probably would not have finished if this hadn't been a buddy read. I round up to a 3 star because of that beaut ...more

I really liked this book, and I don't even know why. It was magical with an unusual kind of magic, that intrigued the reader from the first page. Readers who like tantalizing plots and settings will enjoy this one.
