I recognize and understand how some people find Banville's writing pretentious and overwrought, however, I think it's absolutely beautiful and captivating. Banville is a true wordsmith. This is the first book I've read of his. I wasn't particularly grabbed by the plot of The Sea, but I was really taken by his ruminations on larger themes of life and death. I'm finished in the sense that I can't finish. This is a Booker Prize winner (I have to wonder what the criteria for winning this honor is...) , the musings and remembrances of an older man's childhood by "the sea" after his wife dies. Very rambling and not at all interesting to me, particularly the emphasis on his 12 year old self's obsession with the "lush" body and figure of his friends' mother.

Morden's moves through time in his reminisces can take some getting used to, but Banville offers a surprisingly engaging and suspenseful story of a man looking back over what his life has been and wondering at how a small series of encounters makes him what he is.
