What Members Thought

This book is great. Parts of it are hard to read because of the sad events that happened, unfortunately in real life, too, but it is worth reading every word to help us understand a part of history that was devastating. Yet, the characters made the best of their situations in most cases, and there is a luminous hope and resilience of spirit that shines through even the direst circumstances. I think everyone should read this book to learn about this tragic time in our history.

Disappointing, honestly, and sad. A decent introduction to an area in a tumultuous period of history, but, frankly, a downer. Alan Brennert tells where he should show and, unfortunately, reveals himself as a mediocre writer using the same old historical fiction tropes. This was one of those books a reader who doesn't get around much might find perfectly acceptable, but once he's read his share will recognize for the ambivalent fluff it is.

Incredibly moving story! The setting fascinated me-I didn't know much about Hawaii in the early 1900's.
