This was just enjoyable/educational enough for three stars, but I had quite a few issues with it, especially since it is highly acclaimed (on Goodreads at least).

The story spans many decades of the protagonist's life. Having been diagnosed with leprosy, Rachel is sent away from her family to live in the 'lepers' colony', Moloka'i, at a tender age. She grows up in this colony, meeting friends, falling in love, and getting married all during her time here.

This is where Brennert loses me. It seems

Now, the parts about Moloka'i may, in fact, be well researched, but the whole think put me off. And it was another SPL booklist rec, too.

To be fair though: I finished it. I had no intention of putting it down once I'd

This book was amazing! It is so well-written, but it is incredibly sad! The main character, Rachel, is so likable and she is faced with so many misfortunes. It made my cry in a number of places, so be prepared.

Well it was ok. But I got 2/3's of the way through and couldn't pick it up again. Oh well. I didn't even really want to know how it ended. Maybe someone can tell me. ...more
