This was just enjoyable/educational enough for three stars, but I had quite a few issues with it, especially since it is highly acclaimed (on Goodreads at least).
The story spans many decades of the protagonist's life. Having been diagnosed with leprosy, Rachel is sent away from her family to live in the 'lepers' colony', Moloka'i, at a tender age. She grows up in this colony, meeting friends, falling in love, and getting married all during her time here.

Did not like. Got a poorly researched, "just want to write a novel about an *exotic* place" vibe from it," then got to a bit dealing with an issue I know quite a bit about and it was very apparent that the author did NO real research, as he was getting basic facts completely wrong. Now, the parts about Moloka'i may, in fact, be well researched, but the whole think put me off. And it was another SPL booklist rec, too.

Well it was ok. But I got 2/3's of the way through and couldn't pick it up again. Oh well. I didn't even really want to know how it ended. Maybe someone can tell me.
