One of those books with run-on sentences that strings together all the dialogue between different characters. A rather cute story about a sixteenth century Indian man travelling with an elephant gifted to the Austrian archduke. Felt like reading a very long fable, whose lesson I was not completely sure of in the end.

Saramago's experimental writing style, which lacks punctuation, capital letters, and paragraphs; the style was successful in communicating the store; however, the story's subject (the journey of an elephant given by the King of Portugal to the Archduke of Austria in 1551) was *yawn*. 2 stars for the story, 3 stars for the writing style, so it was 3 stars. ...more
