I'd probably give this three and a half stars if I could - I did like it, and found it beautifully readable, but not quite as good as her novel 'The Namesake' or her first collection of short stories, 'The Interpreter of Maladies'. For me the problem is that some of the stories have twists which seem a bit contrived. However, this is just to say that I'm measuring Lahiri against the high standards she has set for herself.

These are lovely stories -- the reason I gave it a lower score was that I believe I have read it before; and yet nothing really stuck out to me. Interesting characters, stories, and perhaps I haven't read them. But I am still left with the feeling that not much really stuck out or was memorable.

I don't normally like short stories but this one had me hooked from the first page

I really enjoy Lahiri's writing and her window into the complexity of living between cultures.
