'The Thread' was to me a more enjoyable and lighter novel than 'The Island'. Both, however, in equal measure demonstrate Hislop's research skills and her ability to thread together the lives of several characters against a historical backdrop.

A compelling story, well told. Hislop uses what is now becoming her "signature" style of dovetailing a historical tale with a modern day one. However, with this book I felt the historical story could have stood alone with maybe just an epilogue to tell what happened to the family in the future
