Man's life unravels as he fails to find her) but the execution is complex. Along the way Winton introduces the Riders of the title, who may be supernatural beings, but who are also a metaphor for Scully himself. "unseen, patient, doggedly faithful in all weathers and all worlds, waiting for something promised, something that was plainly their due..."
