I think it's his best of the three I've read so far. The raw and tough life lived by the characters sits perfectly in the setting; it could only be Australia. The language is dense and suited to the situations and the country, the characters themselves are alive, believable and (as seems usual for Winton) mostly damaged and suffering. Sounds bleak, but it all fits together into a tale that stays with you long after the book is finished. ...more
