I'm sympathetic with how Wallender sees himself in this adventure/misadventure. He's in a foreign country where he doesn't know the language and that country is in the grip of a siege-mentality struggle between democracy and totalitarianism. He feels the intrigue and stress in his body and mind. There are many references to how he won't be able to think clearly unless he gets some rest, some sleep. It's relentless effort on the part of the writer, author, and reader.

I've enjoyed watching the Swedish TV adaptation (with Krister Henriksson as Wallander) on Netflix and I was curious about the Latvian setting in The Dogs of Riga, but this Wallander story is a real mess. The plot doesn't make any sense. The title makes even less sense. The only saving grace is Wallander himself, whose brooding, anxious, erratic and unassertive behavior is, strangely enough, quite convincing and even charming. Mankell's one of my dad's favorites, and also a very interesting guy - I heard him speak at a book fair several years ago and he had some great stories to share about his time in Africa. Wallander's a great hero - believably flawed but still upright enough that you're firmly in his corner from the get-go. Smartly paced as well - I'll definitely seek out more of his adventures. ...more

I really, really likes this Kurt Wallander book. A great example of Scandinavian noir crime novel.
