As a person who's lived in China for 25 years, this book seems both very familiar but also overly highlighting aspects of China which are surprising to foreign eyes. Hessler was looking to write a book for western audience, and to help them understand China. In that he's done a very good job of showing what stories and life in the countryside is typically like.
