This is a typical Cinderella versus Evil Stepmother story. From the subtitle I anticipated a horror story of deprivation and starvation, little girl sent to the orphanage or sold into slavery type of thing. Instead, it reads more like a poor little rich girl saga. Adeline's mother died shortly after her birth and her father, a wealthy businessman, took on a new trophy wife.
