Murdoch captures the imprisonment we all feel when we suppress our emotions for the sake of keeping the peace perfectly in this drawing-room comedy. Each successive revelation twists the knife a little bit more, so much so that you feel a little bit of schadenfreude-y glee as you see them coming. A great introduction to Murdoch.

Not a review, more like a confession.
This is my first Iris Murdoch book. I shook my head in disbelief about a dozen times while reading it, kind of disgusted at the priggishness, selfishness, self-importance of the characters. And how the story fit together... Was this maybe more shocking when it first came out? Or more innovative? Fresher? Maybe I have to know more about Iris Murdoch's entire works? ...more

Unpleasant people being irrationally unpleasant to each other and drinking a lot.
