I have wanted to read this book for years, after I had seen a snippet of the movie. The book did not disappoint.

Radiation from nuclear bombs have wiped out the Northern Hemisphere, and it is slowly moving south. Dwight Towers, Moira Davidson, Peter and Mary Holmes are all waiting in Melbourne Australia for the inevitable.

08/28/2023: I read this again for a challenge (actually 2 challenges). Despite the topic: Radiation from bombs wiping out the entire world. I really like being in Shute's world

Well. Wasn't that depressing? Nevil Shute treated us to a play-by-play description of humans facing expected death within months due to encroaching radioactivity after an atomic war in the Northern Hemisphere.

Our lucky, unscathed characters are conveniently located in Melbourne, Australia - nearly as far south as possible. They enjoy months of denial as they wait, and wait, and wait.

The novel explores the various ways characters deal with doomsday circumstances. For the most part, life goes on,

A nuclear war occurred in the northern hemisphere and the radiation is slowly spreading south and it will eventually kill everyone on Earth. The book focuses on four main characters, married couple Peter and Mary Holmes, submarine captain Dwight Towers and Moira Davidson. The book opens with the characters knowing they have less than a year left to live. For a book about the end of civilization the first 180 or so page were incredibly boring.
