It's hard to rate this book with 5 stars since it is the most disturbing and appalling book I have ever read. However, it gets 5 stars for the fortitude that the author had in writing about this often overlooked crime against humanity during World War II. Not only are the deliberate, horrific atrocities committed by the Japanese objectively portrayed but Chang even specifically notes that "no race or culture has a monopoly on cruelty" in highlighting the motives behind the seven weeks of unspeak

Brutal. Important history, difficult to read lots of these pages. Mixed feelings - didn’t love all the author commentary. The epilogue was a surprise (I didn’t know anything about the author before reading this). Would recommend reading about the events - not sure if there are other published accounts - those parts are shocking and informative.
