I loved the initial part of the story and the last third, however the middle portion seemed to stretch endlessly, like Dickens was being paid by the word (maybe he was since this was initially serialized!) and just dragged on forever, aimlessly. Some of the characters are beyond wonderful (talking about Joe, Biddy and Herbert and even Wemmick), and some are beyond contempt (can you say Miss Havisham, Estella, Jaggers, Mrs. Joe, Orlick, Pumblechook). I think I read this in 2007, and I absolutely loved it. I love the way Dickens brings his characters to life. He spends so much time in characterization that he sometimes forgets to move the story along, but I don't mind. And in this one, there's quite alot going on, and it moves along well actually.
