This particular translation is so horrid (it's the Project Gutenberg volume and I can't find out the actual translator, alas) that I'm putting it aside. Whoever translated this knew Latin but did not, unfortunately, know how to write decently in English, or at least didn't seem to realize that a word-for-word translation between languages really succeeds; there are eight-line-long sentences with passels of poorly connected dependent clauses that make it impossible to figure out the actual subjec
