A second reading and a different translation did little to improve my opinion of the Aschenbach. I still feel like his stalking of Tadzio was an act of a deranged man, and maybe death was a kindness because it cut his madness short? To me this feels so different from Felix Krull, almost like it was a different author.
All in all, my guess is that I just lack affinity for some Mann's works, and this one in particular I have difficulty with.

Cuts close to the quick post COVID where the lockdown memories are still fresh. The description of an aging man facing the loss of his youth and vigor is touching.
