A second reading and a different translation did little to improve my opinion of the Aschenbach. I still feel like his stalking of Tadzio was an act of a deranged man, and maybe death was a kindness because it cut his madness short? To me this feels so different from Felix Krull, almost like it was a different author.
All in all, my guess is that I just lack affinity for some Mann's works, and this one in particular I have difficulty with. ...more
