This is the first book that I finished by Thomas Mann. I tried to read Magic Mountain many years ago, but gave up halfway through. I really liked this novella, and it is probably a good place to start if one is considering reading Mann. A German writer, Gustav Aschenbach, has achieved fame, fortune and prestige, but he is feeling unsettled and in need of a different environment and a kind of spiritual renewal. He decides to travel south, and ends up in Venice.

A quick, easy read--took me less than 3 hours to finish; I felt like I was right alongside the main character, and I could really see/smell/hear the environment.
