I learned a lot about wilderness trekking and Antartica from reading this very thoroughly researched and detailed book. We follow a mountaineer, Val, and her group of clients following the original route of Amundsen to the South Pole, and as they go we learn much of the history of the race between Amundsen and Scott. We also follow a government employee, Wade, as he delves into the politics and implications of scientific research on the continent, and the Antarctic Treaty. The two come together ...more
