There's so much potential in the premise of this book, but ultimately it reads very much like the novelization of a book report on Pearl S. Buck - the prose is deeply stilted and the characters seem as if they're reading from a script in their second language. Buck's life story is a fascinating one, but this isn't the best presentation.
