Am I ever glad I read this book!
It's a very long read - at 1000 plus pages, but what an adventure! An English sailor is stuck in Japan, in the midst of a war.
I love how it was written with all the unexpected twists and turns. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of all the characters and was completely absorbed in the Japanese culture (16th century).
Definitely on my 'favorites' list. I look forward to reading more from James Clavell.
I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction. ...more

My mother turned me on to this book after I had my wisdom teeth pulled and had nothing else to do (actually she tried to get me to watch the tv series, but I almost always prefer the book). I read this book about every two years. It drags about 3/4 of the way through as a caravan treks through the backwoods of feudal Japan, but otherwise it's an amazing piece of pulp fiction with intensely memorable characters, history and plot. Always a transportation to another time and world.
