Am I ever glad I read this book!
It's a very long read - at 1000 plus pages, but what an adventure! An English sailor is stuck in Japan, in the midst of a war.

I love how it was written with all the unexpected twists and turns. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of all the characters and was completely absorbed in the Japanese culture (16th century).

Definitely on my 'favorites' list. I look forward to reading more from James Clavell.

I'd highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

six thousand five hundred and ninety two trillion names per second to keep track of. Good story, good history lesson... but six thousand five hundred and ninety two trillion names per second to keep track of.

My mother turned me on to this book after I had my wisdom teeth pulled and had nothing else to do (actually she tried to get me to watch the tv series, but I almost always prefer the book). I read this book about every two years. It drags about 3/4 of the way through as a caravan treks through the backwoods of feudal Japan, but otherwise it's an amazing piece of pulp fiction with intensely memorable characters, history and plot. Always a transportation to another time and world. ...more
