This was an odd duck. At first I wondered about the translation, but Grossman is an old hand, so I'm not laying the reading experience at her feet. I'm a big fan of Llosa's War of the End of the World, which is pretty much an epic. With this one, it seems he wanted shrink his focus -- but still have it be a big novel that says things. Whatever. The numerous flashbacks got on my nerves (in English they seemed clumsily handled), and at times even manipulative, thus draining important scenes of the ...more

Shelves: peru
I read this book while in Peru and while I was in the Andes which I think really helped me understand it and increased my enjoyment of the book. This book is a lot of stories woven together but most notably modern politics with ancient beliefs. Sometimes this book creeped me out so much that I had to put it down while I was in the Andes. However I also really recommend it to anyone.

I wanted to know more about the serruchos and what they were up to. Their scenes felt disjointed and vague.
