I chose this because I was on holiday in Istanbul for a short 2 days and wanted to read something set in this city. I have also been wanting to read something from this acclaimed author. This novel was the most highly rated of all his novels. It was all right, but honestly, I did not care very much for any of the characters. I didn't feel connected or engaged to them, nor did I feel like I cared much about the plot (who killed the illustrator). I did not care very much about the love story eithe ...more

A creative murder mystery taken one viewpoint at a time. The reader is a participant in the story, which makes its telling unusual.

In ancient Persian the Sultan's miniaturists compete with one another in a not so friendly way. Who is the best and the favorite is always in question and there are plenty of motives to go around. When a talented miniaturist is found at the bottom of a well, suspicion falls to each of the other favorites.
