I chose this because I was on holiday in Istanbul for a short 2 days and wanted to read something set in this city. I have also been wanting to read something from this acclaimed author. This novel was the most highly rated of all his novels. It was all right, but honestly, I did not care very much for any of the characters. This is my first Orhan Pamuk book and I have to say I loved it from the get-go. This will not be my last Orhan Pamuk book, for sure. I've got several others already listed on my Amazon Wish List. This book was fascinating for the multi-perspectives it gave to the story--from points of view of all kinds who were connected in one way or another with the murder of a classic miniature illuminator from the late 16th century in the city of Istanbul. A creative murder mystery taken one viewpoint at a time. The reader is a participant in the story, which makes its telling unusual.

In ancient Persian the Sultan's miniaturists compete with one another in a not so friendly way. Who is the best and the favorite is always in question and there are plenty of motives to go around. When a talented miniaturist is found at the bottom of a well, suspicion falls to each of the other favorites.
