It's amazing how much Coetzee fits into this slim novel. With its complicated characters who make maddening decisions, the story explores race relations in post-Apartheid South Africa, violence, guilt, and even animal rights. It's a deeply uncomfortable read, but fulfilling at the same time in the way it's able to lay bear the complexity of these issues.

The main plot concerns a University professor in South Africa who has an affair with a student. Told mainly from the professor's POV, I grew to dislike him immensely which made me dislike the book as well. I need to feel some relationship with at least one character in a book and in this one that character was absent.

Very bleak, but also shows glimmers of hope in the capacity for human beings to adapt to the new structure of their world, if only imperfectly.
