I remember enjoying Kundera. I think I was different person in a different world. And besides this, this particular novel is definitely not his best. I don't care if the misogyny and lighthearted abortion talk is satire, a farce, a construct, a way to show the ridiculousness of attempting order over chaos, what have you. It's just too dark and gnarly and it feels awful to read.

If Pfizer had read this book, Viagra wouldn't have been a small blue pill -- or then again, maybe it would have. Kundera creates a great cast of characters -- the artificially inseminating and drum banging fertility doctor, the crazy American and the philandering trumpeter.
