As good as anything I've read by Dickens. What a wonderful gallery of characters! House steward Gabriel Betteridge, with his overall loyalty and decency, and constant use of Robinson Crusoe as a guide through life, is one of the great characters in literature. That said, I found the haunted doctor Ezra Jennings to be one of those secondary characters that stay with you forever. Anyway, as many have noted, The Moonstone is considered the first, and still among the very best, of detective novels.

When I read The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins I loved it. In fact, it is up there with my all time favourite books. Consequently, I think I perhaps expected too much from this book as The Woman in White was a very hard act to follow.

I really enjoyed The Moonstone. I loved the characters, particularly Mr. Betteredge.
A sacred jewel, a diamond is stolen from an Indian shrine and ends up in Yorkshire England, where it is given to a young girl on her 18th birthday. Basically that is where the story begins, but it ends up effecting many peoples lives in mysterious ways.

This book is widely acknowledged to be the first mystery but mystery lovers may be somewhat disappointed in the solution. I was. But there are enough fun plot twists and turns to make up for that. The book is really about the characters. Collins does an amazing job of making the characters so real you feel you can see them. That and his enlightened attitude toward race and class are what make this book a classic, in my opinion.
