I've never seen the famous play and I know almost nothing about the story, so reading The Phantom of the Opera was a wonderful surprise for me. I enjoyed very much the wit and cleverness of most of this novel, especially the passages with the two Opera directors, Richard and Moncharmin. They are hilarious in the style of Jerome K. Jerome.
Secondly, it reminded me that I did not went to Opera for several years now. And the authors obvious love of music and opera sparkled mine as well. I so loved the musical that I thought I had to read the book. It was kind of creepy. I liked the musical better, although it was interesting reading about the history of the Paris Opera House.
