I've never seen the famous play and I know almost nothing about the story, so reading The Phantom of the Opera was a wonderful surprise for me. I enjoyed very much the wit and cleverness of most of this novel, especially the passages with the two Opera directors, Richard and Moncharmin. They are hilarious in the style of Jerome K. Jerome.
Secondly, it reminded me that I did not went to Opera for several years now. And the authors obvious love of music and opera sparkled mine as well.
