Kadare has written a ton of books, many of which are like this one, short and superficially simple. The story takes place in 1377-80 and is set in a small Albanian town on the bank of a river whose name translates as "Wicked Waters." It's narrated by a Christian monk, whose quarters look out over the river, which for decades is crossed by a toll ferry.
