Unless was good, but like most contemporary fiction, it keeps the reader at an arm's length so that one never really is immersed in the story. Part of it was the choice of first person narrative - a narrator describes only what she sees, not adding enough details outside of her scope. I felt I was making up more of the story as I went along, but I don't care for my conjectures, I am in it to get a different point of view when I read. This is what I mean when I say good woman writing. She tells an amazing story, the writing blew me away, and there was so much to think about. I wasn't expecting too much, because I read The Stone Diaries, and was so blown away that I didn't think she could ever write anything anywhere near as good, and I didn't want to be dissappointed.
