3.5 stars. I have read several books by Hermann Hesse, and although I may never really completely satisfied with the endings, I enjoy the journey.

I read this in my senior year of high school for my class, Western Thought. I thought it was one of the most fascinating books I had ever read. It is a book I've thought about a lot and I've always intended to read it again.

This is my favorite of the many Hesse novels I've read. It was perhaps the most intellectually stimulating, even as it served as a critique of intellectualism (if that makes any sense). The rarefied world of the masters of the Glass Bead Game, I recall, served as a warning not to become overly self-absorbed as I earnestly prepared to go off to college.
