This is not normally something I would read, but since it was a gift, I plowed through it. I have to say it was like I was in English Lit. again having to read a book for a grade. Barely 2 stars, as I had to skim through a LOT to finish. Very Japanese, understated translation maybe, not a lot happening, more of a character study. Hard for me to visualize this 1912 Japan and the people in it. Maybe it was just too "literary" for me...? Vaguely depressing.

just as profound and a pleasure to read in polish as it was in english...
The beauty of the writing of this book redeemed it an it for me. There are definitely some life lessons in here but I tend not to be a huge fan of books where a main character is wallowing in the past.
