The story of a Muslim family living in Cairo in the latter days of WWI. We spend a lot of time getting to know each of the family members--a mother, three sons, and two daughters--under the tyrannical rule of their husband/father, who himself enjoys his double life of being a strict authoritarian at home, and a joyful, witty, salacious bon vivant outside of it.
