This is the first novel by Lola Shoneyin .I was interested in reading this book because the author has published poetry in the past and in my experience this actually prepares writers for telling their stories in a succient manner, and her father-in-law is Wole Soyinka, so I figured she has access to good literary resources to make sure that she wrote a worthy book. Having read so little African fiction, I found this fascinating, enlightening. I have nothing to compare it to so if I call it refreshing, sobering, a little magical, and funny, I could be wrong. But I am so glad I read this. Some characters are despicable but still all are lovable and the secret lives-- also the public lives-- are really interesting. I pretty much devoured this book.
