I am so glad I went back and read Mrs. Dalloway before reading this one. I loved Michael Cunningham's writing and I liked the retelling. My favorite character in this book is Laura, who wanted to read so much that she abandoned responsibilities to have a few hours to herself, to lose herself in a book.

Cunningham excels at lyrical descriptions of the nuances of human emotions and behavior. The intertwining of the lives of the characters is intriguing and well done. Reading this book made me want to read or reread Virginia Woolf's books. But reader beware: this novel is depressing and filled with people who are depressed, suicidal, sick with AIDS, aging, and dying. Not exactly a cheerful read.

I admire this in the same way that I do a great dress on an elegant woman or a perfectly presented meal at a fancy restaurant - it's just pretty and pleasant to encounter, in spite of the somewhat dour theme of isolation at its core. I may not be wiser for having read it, but I do feel the boost you always get from seeing something lovely.
