Story of social and family relationships in turn of the century England focusing on three families. The Wilcoxes are rich capitalists who made their fortune in the colonies. The half-German Schlegel siblings now living in London with an aunt after the death of both parents. The Barts are a struglling couple in the lower middle class. The Schlegel sisters try to help the poor Barts while endeavoring to make the Wilcoxes less prejudiced.

This book is beautiful. It’s dense - I think one needs to read it slowly and maybe twice to start to get a sense of the beauty of book’s writing and structure.
